Corneal MoldingCorneal Molding (CM) is to Orthokeratology (OK) what computer assisted designing (CAD) is to pencil and paper sketches. The fundamental concepts with each process is reshaping (flattening) the cornea of the eye by use of a RGP contact lens or mold to reduce refractive errors. After night time wear of the lens or mold, it is removed and the cornea retains its flattened shape for the remainder of the day or up to three days with CM. The lens or mold must be used each day or so to maintain the corneal flattening or the refractive error will revert to pre treatment levels. Present day OK has been in use for over 40 years. Many changes in the designs, processes and materials have occurred since its inception. In addition to "OK" some of the names you may be familiar with are AOK or Accelerated Orthokeratology, CRT or Corneal Refractive Therapy, and CCC or Corneal Corrective Contacts. CM or Corneal Molding is unique since it is the only system in the world which utilizes the up to 14,000 readings of each patients unique cornea when captured with a Scout or Keratron topographer (the same type of instrument used when having wavefront guides LASIK surgery) which is then analyzed by the advanced Wave software for study by the doctor. A unique corneal mold is designed based on the patients specific corneal surface, corneal size and shape factors, pupil diameter, spectacle prescription, corneal physiology and epithelial thickness. WCM is the only process which utilizes a specific and proven process of selecting candidates, analyzing data and designing mold yielding over 95% success. Or check out the Paragon CRT site: http://www.paragoncrt.com/. Myopia (nearsightedness) and/or astigmatism can be treated with WCM. Flattening of the central cornea moves the focal points back on the retina which creates crystal clear vision. Children and adults can be treated with WCM. Additionally, slowing to stopping progressive myopia (nearsightedness) in children is frequently realized by controlling the axial length of the eye. This results in fewer to no changes in the child's prescription which avoids the likelihood of the need for thick glasses when he/she is a teenager. One millionth of a meter is one micron which is the increment of measurement used with WCM. 6 (six) microns of corneal flattening relieves one diopter of myopia (nearsightedness). A human hair is about 125 microns thick. The average cornea is approximately 550 microns thick. WCM effects only this layer of cells and in fact simply repositions intra cellular water within the anterior layer of this corneal "skin." Topography is the measurement of surface elevations. The Scout corneal topographer measures up to 14,000 points on the cornea. This information is used to design a unique and precise corneal mold to the sensitivity of one micron. Corneal topographers are similarly used with the current cutting edge LASIK procedures which allows the surgeon to provide custom laser ablations. In fact, the utilization of topographical information has been used for more years with Orthokeratology than it has been used with LASIK refractive surgery. LASIK surprisingly produces nearly exactly the same post treatment maps as WCM. Though the processes are distinctly different, and their pros and cons should be carefully weighed, successful outcomes by either procedure result in fantastic uncorrected vision. Dr. Wilcox has co-managed nearly 1,000 refractive surgery procedures since 1995 and underwent LASIK in his right eye and has INTACS intra corneal rings in his left eye. This makes him a honest authority who routinely provides trustworthy advise regarding each patients' choice for their vision correction. Advantages: - Freedom from daytime glasses and contact lenses - Relief from daytime contact lens complications - Sports performance - swimming, soccer, skiing , biking - Safe - Non-surgical - Reversible - Adjustable
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS“What is Corneal Molding (CM)?” Corneal Molding uses uniquely designed gas permeable lenses (molds) to gently and gradually reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea) to eliminate or reduce nearsightedness (myopia) or astigmatism. The molds are similar to conventional contact lenses and are worn at night while sleeping. They are removed upon awakening to provide clear vision without using glasses or contact lenses! The molds are comfortable and very easy to care for.
“I’ve never heard of CM. Is it new?” Attempts to reshape the cornea have been tried since contact lenses were first fit. This process (referred to as orthokeratology) would take years to complete. For this reason, many doctors and patients elected not to participate in orthokeratology. Now, a small group of doctors in the country use a topographer to capture a “fingerprint” of the cornea. That data is imported into a unique software program, which allows the doctor to create a one-of-a-kind corneal mold for that patient’s cornea and prescription needs. CM is now a viable alternative for patients with nearsightedness, astigmatism and farsightedness.
“How much does CM cost?” The entire CM program starts at $990. Fees depend on the complexity of the prescription. This includes all of the associated professional visits for 6 months.
“Do I have to pay this every year?” No, the CM program, once completed, allows the patient to see without glasses or contact lenses as long as they wear their molds at night. After the program is completed, you will continue to have annual eye examinations and maintenance checkups. The checkups are included in our Maintenance Program and lower the cost of the molds, which begin at $159.
“Do all eye doctors perform CM?” No, CM does not work on every patient and needs to be performed in a very exact and meticulous manner. Dr. Wilcox has performed this technique since 2000 and has extensive experience. In addition, he has the necessary diagnostic equipment, computer software and knowledge to perform CM.
“Does CM work on all prescriptions?” The procedure works best on mild to moderate amount of nearsightedness, astigmatism and some farsightedness. More severe cases have been successfully molded by Dr. Wilcox. The speed of CM varies with each patient.
“When it comes to eyes, I’m very concerned, is it safe?” CM is very safe and we utilize FDA approved materials, it is safe for children and adults and is an excellent alternative for children who are just becoming nearsighted.
“Does CM help stop my child’s eyes form getting worse?” In our opinion, children with progressive nearsightedness should wear these lenses in an attempt to reduce their myopia progression. For financing information visit : www.healthcard.citicards.com
